Home Our Approach Clinical therapy

Clinical therapy

At Meadowcroft School, we recognise that learning, wellbeing and development are closely connected.

Many of our pupils have experienced barriers to education and may need additional support with communication, emotional regulation, relationships, sensory needs, confidence or engagement with learning. Our clinical and therapeutic provision works alongside education and pastoral support to help us understand each young person and create the conditions in which they can Belong. Thrive. Succeed.

Working Together Around the Child

Our approach is multidisciplinary.

Clinical, education, pastoral and leadership colleagues work together to develop a shared understanding of each pupil’s strengths, needs and individual profile. Rather than viewing therapeutic support as something separate from education, we aim to ensure that specialist knowledge informs the pupil’s everyday experience of school.

This may include consultation with staff, assessment, observation, individual or group intervention, therapeutic support, advice and strategies for the classroom, and collaboration with families and other professionals.

The nature and level of support will always be determined by the individual needs of the young person.

Understanding the Individual

Every pupil at Meadowcroft is unique.

Our clinical team draws upon information from Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), previous assessments, professional reports, observations and discussions with the young person, their family and the professionals around them.

Where appropriate, further specialist assessment may help us develop a deeper understanding of a pupil’s communication, emotional, sensory or developmental needs.

This information helps us identify strengths as well as potential barriers to learning and informs the strategies, provision and individual targets that support each young person.

Most importantly, assessment is not about attaching labels to pupils. It is about understanding what they need in order to participate, learn and make progress.

Therapeutic Support

Therapeutic support at Meadowcroft is responsive to individual need.

Depending upon the needs identified for a pupil, support may include individual work, small-group intervention, consultation or approaches embedded within the school day.

Areas of focus may include:

  • communication and interaction;
  • emotional awareness and regulation;
  • relationships and social understanding;
  • confidence and self-esteem;
  • sensory and developmental needs;
  • resilience and coping strategies;
  • engagement and readiness for learning; and
  • developing greater independence.

Where individual therapeutic work takes place, appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality are maintained while ensuring that relevant information is shared safely with those who need it to support the young person effectively.

Supporting Learning Every Day

The impact of clinical and therapeutic support should extend beyond an individual session.

Clinical colleagues work alongside education and pastoral teams to help staff understand the needs underlying a pupil’s presentation and identify approaches that can support them throughout the school day.

This might include adapting the learning environment, developing communication strategies, supporting regulation, advising on individual approaches or helping colleagues understand how a pupil experiences particular situations.

Through consultation, training and professional development, our clinical team also helps build the confidence and expertise of the wider staff team.

This means that specialist support can have an impact not only during therapeutic intervention, but in classrooms, during transitions, at social times and throughout a pupil’s experience of Meadowcroft.

A Relational and Trauma-Informed Approach

Relationships are central to our work.

We recognise that behaviour communicates need and that a young person’s experiences can influence how they understand relationships, manage emotions and respond to the world around them.

Our approach therefore seeks to understand what may be happening beneath a pupil’s behaviour rather than simply responding to what we see.

Through predictable routines, trusted relationships, appropriate boundaries and individualised support, we help pupils develop a greater sense of safety, belonging and confidence.

We want pupils gradually to develop the strategies they need to understand themselves, regulate more independently and participate successfully in learning and wider school life.

Pastoral Support

Our pastoral provision works closely alongside education and clinical colleagues to provide pupils with consistent support throughout the school day.

Pastoral staff are highly visible across Meadowcroft and play an important role in building relationships, supporting emotional regulation, promoting positive behaviour and helping pupils overcome barriers to engagement and attendance.

Support is available during lessons, transitions and less structured parts of the day, ensuring that pupils have access to trusted adults when they need them.

Our pastoral approach promotes:

  • positive relationships and a strong sense of belonging;
  • engagement with education and improved attendance;
  • emotional regulation and wellbeing;
  • respectful behaviour and positive choices;
  • resilience and increasing independence;
  • equality, inclusion and respect for others; and
  • successful participation in learning and school life.

Pastoral support is not simply about responding when something has gone wrong. It is about knowing our pupils well, anticipating need and creating the conditions that help them succeed.

Working with Families and Professionals

Supporting a young person effectively requires strong partnership.

Our clinical and therapeutic team works with parents and carers, school colleagues, Local Authorities and other professionals involved in a pupil’s care and education.

Relevant information, assessments and recommendations are shared appropriately so that those supporting the young person can develop a consistent understanding of their needs.

Where appropriate, clinical colleagues contribute to reviews, individual planning and discussions about progress and future provision.

By working together, we aim to ensure that support is coherent, purposeful and centred around the needs and aspirations of the young person.

Building Independence

Ultimately, our clinical and therapeutic provision is about enabling pupils to become increasingly successful without needing adults to solve every difficulty for them.

We want young people to understand themselves better, communicate their needs, develop strategies for managing challenge and build the confidence to participate more independently in education, relationships and everyday life.

By bringing together education, therapeutic expertise and pastoral support, we create an environment in which pupils are understood, supported and challenged to make meaningful progress.

Because when young people feel safe, understood and valued, they are better able to learn, develop and thrive.

Belong. Thrive. Succeed.
