Friday 8th June was a fantastic day for The Works at Meadowcroft School as we saw the launch of an exciting programme which will expose our pupils to a wealth of expertise and opportunities within the Construction Industry. Tim Platt, the Managing Director of Class of Your Own, who run the DEC programme were joined by representatives from Arup; Emily Dudfield – Senior Mechanical Engineer and Alex Price – Electrical Engineer, who have been partnered with Meadowcroft to support our students in the achievement of this accreditation.
The launch party were expertly guided around the site by David Bird, Head of Construction at Meadowcroft School and a group of students who keenly discussed their learning at The Works and were genuinely intrigued and excited by what the partnership with Arup and the delivery of DEC could do for them. They were also joined by the Headteacher, Lynette Edwards and Deputy Headteacher, Darren Singh who are also incredibly enthusiastic about the extra opportunities available to pupils.
David advised: ‘This partnership gives our pupils a fantastic opportunity to train for a career in the construction industry using the latest technology, ensuring they are fully prepared for life after leaving school.’
One of the pupils assisting on the tour, Declan, explained: ‘I am looking forward to learning how to use the new equipment, especially the virtual reality goggles and on the job experience we will get.’
What Is DEC?
Design Engineer Construct! (DEC!) is an accredited learning programme for secondary-school age students and has been expertly developed to create and inspire the next generation of Built Environment professionals. Through a project-based approach, DEC! applies pure academic subjects to the latest construction industry practices such as the use of computer aided design (CAD) software such as Revit.
Thanks to the extraordinary support of industry leaders, professional bodies and progressive universities, DEC! delivers an inspiring programme that is up to date and in demand by the very people who will employ our children.
DEC! offers a new and innovative project based approach to learning that is both challenging and rewarding. Learners will develop knowledge and skills by undertaking a sustainable building project and, through industry lead training workshops, have guaranteed face to face engagement with industry professionals.
Who are Arup?
In order to engage with industry, Meadowcroft will now be working in partnership with Arup, a well-established Global construction company. Arup is best known for its design work for the built environment. Projects to which it has contributed include the Sydney Opera House, since then Arup has gone on to contribute to “The Gherkin” and the Millennium Bridge (London) and “Birds Nest Stadium” (Beijing) to name but a few. The firm continues to grow and develop communities and support the built environment. We at Meadowcroft welcome Arup’s participation in our curriculum with their vast experience and opportunities they have to offer our young people.
Over the next 5 years approximately half the construction industry’s workforce will reach retirement age, coinciding with this is very limited take up for construction apprenticeships, as few young people aspire to a career in the construction industry. The consequence will be a massive national demand for employees with construction skills particularly those within the digital built environment. We at Meadowcroft School wish to take full advantage of these career opportunities by offering the DEC! programme, to equip our children with the very latest technical skills, knowledge and qualifications and in doing so offer the best possible chances of gaining successful careers in this important sector of the British and global economy.
